Bill Brodrick was born in Cincinnati, Ohio on July 25, 1938, the first son of Robert and Clar Brodrick. During WWII he and his mother lived in Indiana and Michigan with relatives while his father served in the US Army. After the war he returned to Cincinnati. Bill graduated from Purcell High School in 1956.
Bill's interest in cars and racing began with the purchase of a new Corvette in 1960. This led to working on a Maserati 200si and a Cooper Formula Junior for friends who raced. In 1964 Bill began hosting a racing radio program on WNOP in Newport, Ky. and later moved to WKRC radio/tv (Taft Broadcasting) in Cincinnati while becoming motorsports writer for the Cincinnati Enquirer.
On January 1, 1969 Bill started working for the Union Oil Co. of California (Union 76) as Supervisor of Public Relations for the Racing Division. A position he held for 29 years.
Bill became known to thousands of race fans throughout the country as "The Hat Man" Bill began putting order into racing's victory lane celebrations and orchestrated the placement of sponsor's hats on winning drivers. Fans saw him but did not know his name, so, he became known as racing's Hat Man. He has worked victory lanes in every venue of motorsports all around the world.
After being released from his job at Union Oil when the company was sold in 1997, Bill bought and operated a tavern in Algonquin, Ill. where he resides. After 12 years of operation a declining economy forced him to sell.
He now attends car shows, car auctions and charitable racing events. He is a judge at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance and is quick to autograph a trading card.
Bill is also Group Commander of the Aeroship Division of the racing team of Bolus & Snopes.
In September of 2015 Bill was awarded the Corvette Crossed Flags Award from GM Racing for being a member of the 1989 24 Hours of Le Mans Expedition Team.
Life is not a journey to the grave safe and in a well-preserved body, but rather sliding in sideways, completely worn out, shouting....."Holy Moly, what a ride".
